Seasons Change: Trusting God in the Waiting

by | Blog

Life is full of seasons – some joyful and full of abundance, others painful and filled with loss. But perhaps the hardest season of all is the waiting season. It’s the time when we pray, listen, and look around, but we don’t see God moving the way we hoped.

It’s the season where we wonder, Did He hear me? Is anything happening? Waiting can feel like wandering through a desert, searching for an oasis that never seems to appear. It’s in these moments of uncertainty that our faith is truly tested.

We live in a world that celebrates instant results. If we want to watch a show, we stream it instantly. If we want to buy something, we can have it delivered to our doorstep within hours. But God doesn’t operate on human timetables.

His ways are higher than ours, and His plans unfold in His perfect timing, not ours. That can be frustrating when we are desperate for answers, but it is also where true trust is built.

Trust isn’t developed in times of clarity; it is forged in the waiting, in the tension between expectation and fulfillment.

The Challenge of Waiting

The reason we struggle with waiting is simple: uncertainty. We crave control, predictability, and even a timeline we can put on our calendars. If you’re anything like me, patience is not your strong suit.

My husband teases me by calling me Veruca Salt from Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory – you know, the girl who dramatically whines, “Daddy, I want it NOW!” That’s me when I’m waiting on God!

In those times, if I’m not careful, I can find myself going from a person of faith to someone who is spiritually pacing, anxiously wondering why God hasn’t answered my prayers yet.

Too often, we say we trust God, but if we’re honest, we can act more like backseat drivers, giving Him step-by-step instructions on how and when He should answer our prayers. Lord, here’s my plan, and if You could just sign off on it and make it happen by next Tuesday, that would be great!

But that’s not trust – that’s trying to maintain control. And control is an illusion. We were never meant to bear the weight of orchestrating our own destiny. That is God’s job.

And what happens when we don’t see immediate movement? We start to doubt. We wonder if we missed God’s voice. We wrestle with discouragement, and sometimes, we’re even tempted to take matters into our own hands.

But the truth is, rushing ahead of God will never lead to the best outcome. Every time I have tried to force things to happen on my own timeline, I have later looked back and realized that God’s way was so much better than mine could have ever been.

There is peace in surrender, even when surrender means waiting longer than we’d like.

The Truth About God’s Timing

Ecclesiastes 3:1 reminds us, “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” God’s timing is never rushed, but it is always perfect.

Even when we can’t see what He’s doing, He is working behind the scenes in ways we don’t understand. The delay is not a denial.

Sometimes, the answer to our prayers is “Not yet.” Not because God is withholding something good from us, but because He is preparing something even greater.

Think about the seasons in nature. You don’t see flowers bloom in the middle of winter, and you don’t harvest fruit before it’s ripe. If we trust that God set up a rhythm for creation, why do we struggle to trust Him with the seasons of our own lives?

God does not plant seeds only to abandon them; He cultivates, nurtures, and brings forth fruit in the right time. Our waiting is not wasted. It is in the waiting that God often does His most important work in us.

How Do We Trust God in the Waiting?

Here are some practical ways to strengthen our trust when we’re in a season of waiting:

1. Remember Past Faithfulness

Look back at times when God came through for you before. If He was faithful then, He will be faithful now. Keep a journal of answered prayers so you can remind yourself of His track record.

When we reflect on how He has guided us in the past, it builds confidence in His future provision. Our emotions may forget, but written reminders of His goodness can ground us when doubt tries to creep in.

2. Stay Rooted in Scripture

When your emotions tell you that nothing is happening, let God’s Word remind you of His promises. Meditate on verses like Isaiah 40:31 (“Those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength”) and Romans 8:28 (“In all things God works for the good of those who love Him”).

Scripture has the power to anchor us when the storms of uncertainty rage around us. The more we immerse ourselves in God’s truth, the less we are swayed by fear.

3. Pray Honestly but Trust Fully

It’s okay to tell God you’re struggling with waiting. He isn’t offended by our honesty. But don’t just vent – surrender. Pray, “Lord, I trust You even when I don’t understand.”

The act of laying our worries at His feet brings peace that surpasses understanding. Prayer doesn’t just change our circumstances; it changes us.

4. Worship While You Wait

Waiting seasons are not wasted seasons. Worship shifts our focus from our circumstances to His sovereignty. Sing, praise, and declare His goodness even before you see the answer.

There is something powerful about praising God in the middle of uncertainty. It is a declaration of trust, a reminder that He is worthy regardless of the outcome.

5. Surround Yourself with Encouragement

Stay connected with people who will remind you of God’s faithfulness when doubt creeps in. The enemy loves to isolate us in waiting seasons, but we need faith-filled community.

We were never meant to do life alone. A trusted friend or mentor can offer the encouragement we need to stay strong.

6. Take the Next Right Step

Trusting God doesn’t mean doing nothing. Keep being faithful in what you can do while trusting Him for what you can’t. Serve, grow, and prepare for what’s next. God often calls us to action even while we wait.

There may be lessons to learn, people to serve, or skills to develop in this season. Don’t underestimate the growth that can happen while you wait.

7. Let Go of the Timeline

God is never late. His plans are higher, and He sees the full picture when we only see a small part. Our job is obedience; His job is the outcome.

When we release our need for control, we open ourselves up to the unexpected blessings He has prepared. Surrendering our timeline doesn’t mean giving up hope; it means trusting that His way is better than anything we could orchestrate on our own.

8. Choose to Believe He is Good

At the core of our struggle with waiting is this question: Can I really trust God’s heart? The answer is yes. He is not punishing you, forgetting you, or ignoring you – He is preparing you. His love is constant, even in the silence.

A Final Encouragement

If you are in a waiting season, take heart: You will reap in due season if you do not give up (Galatians 6:9). Don’t rush the process. Don’t get ahead of what God is doing. Trust that in His perfect time, what He has promised will come to pass.

Waiting is hard. But the same God who created the seasons of nature created the seasons of your life. And He is faithful in every single one of them.
