We’ve all probably heard the quote, “Life is a journey, not a destination.” It’s a phrase that gets tossed around so often it can start to sound like a cliché, but if you stop to think about it, there’s so much truth tucked inside those words.
The same can be said about our healing. Healing isn’t a place you arrive at one day and declare yourself finished. It’s a journey — sometimes long, sometimes winding, sometimes uphill — and it’s rarely as straightforward as we’d like it to be.
But let’s be real for a minute: sometimes that journey feels like a road trip with a flat tire in the middle of nowhere. You know the kind — it’s raining, your phone has no service, and you’re not even sure how you got so off course.
On my own healing journey, there were days I felt like it was Groundhog Day. One day seemed just like the next, and I recognized that if I didn’t make some choices, I would be stuck.
After a while, I recognized something important: if I didn’t make intentional choices, if I didn’t do something — anything— to break the cycle, I was going to stay stuck.
Healing, like life, is a process. It’s not a race to the finish line, and it certainly isn’t a straight path. There are moments when you feel like you’ve made incredible strides, and others when you feel like you’ve taken ten steps backward. But let me reassure you right now: you are not stuck. Even if it feels like you’re standing still, you are still in progress. And there’s hope in that.
The key is to recognize when you’re feeling emotionally stuck, shift your mindset from perfection to progress, and then take action — no matter how small — to keep moving forward, one step at a time.
Signs You Might Be Emotionally Stuck
Healing isn’t linear. If you’ve been on your own healing journey for any length of time, you probably already know that some days feel like breakthroughs and others feel like setbacks. But if you’re experiencing some of these signs, it might be an indication that you’re stuck in an emotional holding pattern. It doesn’t mean you’re broken or failing — it just means your heart is asking for a little extra care and attention.
- Replaying the past – Do you find yourself constantly reliving painful memories without finding any real resolution? Are you stuck in a loop of what you wish you had said or done differently, playing the same scenes over and over in your head like a movie you can’t stop watching?
- Avoidance – Are there conversations you refuse to have, people you avoid, or situations you steer clear of because they stir up old pain? Avoidance might feel like protection in the short term, but it often keeps us tethered to the very things we’re trying to escape.
- Numbness – Instead of feeling your emotions, do you find yourself detached and disconnected, going through the motions without truly engaging? Numbness can be a coping mechanism when things feel too overwhelming, but staying there for too long can prevent genuine healing.
- Negative self-talk – Are you caught in a cycle of self-criticism, believing that you’ll never get better, that you’re weak for still struggling, or that healing isn’t possible for you? The stories we tell ourselves matter, and those inner narratives can either keep us stuck or set us free.
- Lack of motivation – Do you feel exhausted by the very thought of taking even one step forward? Is it easier to stay in the familiar discomfort of where you are than to face the uncertainty of change? You’re not alone in that feeling, but it’s worth recognizing when apathy is starting to weigh you down.
Recognizing these signs is the first, most important step. Awareness is a powerful thing. It helps us realize that we’re not beyond hope or repair — we’re just in a season where we need a little extra support and some intentional, gentle action to begin moving forward again.
Reframing Your Mindset: Progress Over Perfection
Perfectionism has a way of making us feel like we’ve failed before we even start. Healing is not about getting it right 100% of the time. It’s about showing up for yourself, even in the mess.
Instead of thinking, I should be further along, shift your mindset to: I am moving forward, even if today it’s just by one small step. Instead of thinking, I’ll never heal from this, shift to: I am learning how to navigate my healing at my own pace.
One of the biggest lies we believe is that if healing isn’t happening fast, it’s not happening at all. That’s simply not true. Healing happens in layers, and sometimes the progress is so slow we don’t see it until we look back and realize we’re not where we used to be.
Actionable Steps to Keep Moving Forward
When you feel stuck, the goal is movement, not speed, not perfection, just movement. No matter how small, each intentional step matters. Here are a few ways to gently nudge yourself forward when the weight of being stuck feels heavy:
Break It Down into Small Steps
The idea of “healing” as one massive, overwhelming goal can feel paralyzing. So stop trying to conquer it all at once. Focus on today. What is one small, simple thing you can do for your healing right now? Maybe it’s journaling for five minutes. Maybe it’s calling a friend. Maybe it’s allowing yourself to acknowledge a difficult emotion instead of burying it. Small steps create momentum.
Practice Self-Compassion
Talk to yourself like you would to a dear friend. Would you tell a struggling friend, “Wow, you should be over this by now”? Of course not. You’d offer them grace, patience, and encouragement. Learn to extend that same kindness to yourself. Healing is hard work, and you’re doing the best you can.
Connect with Safe People
Isolation fuels emotional “stuckness.” When we withdraw from the people who care about us, we get trapped in our own heads. Reach out to someone you trust, whether it’s a friend, a counselor, or a support group. You don’t have to spill everything if you’re not ready — sometimes just saying, “I’m having a tough day” is enough to let someone in. Healing happens in community.
Limit the Negative Inputs
If your social media feed, the news, or certain people in your life are constantly reinforcing negativity, despair, or hopelessness, it’s okay — and healthy — to step back. Choose what you allow into your heart and mind. Replace toxic inputs with content that uplifts, inspires, or reminds you of the good still present in your life.
Celebrate Small Wins
Did you set a boundary today? Did you cry instead of numbing out? Did you get out of bed even when you didn’t feel like it? That’s progress. Don’t wait for the big milestones to acknowledge your growth. Every small, brave, imperfect step matters. Celebrate them.
Anchor Yourself in Truth
God’s promises remind us that we are never alone in our healing. His Word is filled with assurances of His presence, faithfulness, and love — even in the valleys. Find scriptures that resonate with your heart in this season and meditate on them. Write them down. Speak them aloud. Truth has the power to anchor us when our emotions try to sweep us away.
You Are Not Stuck — You Are in Progress
Healing isn’t about speed; it’s about direction. You don’t have to have it all figured out today. You just have to take the next right step. Even if today’s step is simply recognizing that you want to move forward, that’s movement. That’s progress. So, if you’re feeling stuck, take a deep breath. You are not behind. You are not failing. You are healing—one imperfect, beautiful, courageous step at a time.
