When Life Feels Like Survival Instead of Growth
There are seasons in my life that I have absolutely no desire to relive. That isn’t because they didn’t shape me or because they lacked meaning. In many ways, those seasons were deeply significant. But they were also hard, stretching, humbling, and painful in ways that are difficult to fully explain.
During those times, there were days when I felt like I was barely holding things together. Some nights I would lie awake wondering if I had the strength to keep moving forward. In those moments, survival felt like the only goal that mattered.
I wasn’t thinking about whether I was growing or transforming. I wasn’t imagining a future version of myself who would look back with clarity and gratitude. Most days, I was simply trying to make it to tomorrow.
If I’m honest, even that sometimes felt overwhelming.
When life enters a season like that, everything can feel fragile. The routines that once felt easy suddenly require far more energy than you have to give. The strength you once relied on can feel distant, and the questions in your mind can become constant companions.
It’s easy to wonder whether anything good could possibly come from such heavy circumstances.
At the time, I couldn’t see anything beyond the difficulty of the moment. But looking back now, I realize those seasons held something I simply couldn’t recognize while I was living through them.
When I reflect on that time today, what I see is very different from what I felt then. What once felt like barely surviving was, in reality, a season of quiet growth. I was growing all along, even though it didn’t feel like growth at the moment.
It felt like endurance. It felt like taking the next breath and the next step, even when both required effort. Beneath the surface, something steady and strong was forming in my life.
Why Growth Often Happens Beneath the Surface
When you’re in the middle of a difficult season, growth rarely feels obvious. More often, it feels like you are simply doing the next right thing. It looks like whispering short, honest prayers and putting one foot in front of the other, even when your energy is low and your heart feels tired.
Growth is rarely dramatic while it’s happening. Instead, it tends to unfold quietly and gradually, hidden beneath the surface of everyday life.
We often expect growth to feel inspiring or visible, something marked by clear progress or milestones we can celebrate. But real growth often looks very different from what we imagine.
Sometimes growth looks like refusing to give up when circumstances are discouraging. Sometimes it looks like showing up for another day when your heart feels heavy. Other times, it looks like offering a quiet prayer when you don’t have the words or strength for anything more.
Those moments may not appear significant from the outside, but they matter deeply. In those quiet and faithful choices, something inside you is being shaped. Your character is being strengthened, your endurance is being built, and your faith is learning how to stand even when life feels uncertain.
Even when you cannot see it clearly, something meaningful is taking place.
Finding Faith During Hard Seasons
One of the most important truths I’ve learned through those experiences is that God does not waste hard seasons.
That doesn’t mean He causes them, and it certainly doesn’t mean He delights in our pain. Hard seasons are still painful. Loss still hurts, disappointment still stings, and waiting can stretch our patience and our hearts more than we ever expected.
But even in those difficult moments, God remains faithful.
Over time, I began to understand that He is present in ways we sometimes only recognize later. Scripture reminds us of this in Romans 5:3-4, which tells us “suffering produces perseverance, perseverance produces character, and character produces hope”.
At the time, perseverance may feel like nothing more than endurance. It may feel like simply continuing forward when everything inside you wants to stop. But perseverance is powerful because it builds strength slowly and steadily in places we didn’t even realize needed strengthening.
Through those experiences, we begin to learn that we can keep going even when things feel uncertain. And throughout it all, God remains steady. While our emotions shift and circumstances change, His presence does not move.
What Hard Seasons Can Build in You
If I had the choice, I would never willingly step back into those seasons again. Yet I can clearly see now that they developed strength within me that a life without challenges never could have created.
Looking back, I recognize:
- A resilience I didn’t know I had
- A steadiness in my faith that is not as easily shaken
- A deeper compassion for others walking through pain
- A strength that was forming when I thought I was barely surviving
None of these qualities appeared overnight. They were shaped gradually through ordinary moments and small decisions that once felt insignificant.
They grew through the quiet choice to keep trusting, to keep hoping, and to keep showing up even when I didn’t feel strong. At the time, I thought I was simply trying to make it through. Now I understand something deeper was happening.
I wasn’t just surviving those seasons.
I was growing.
Biblical Encouragement When You Feel Stuck
During difficult seasons, one passage of Scripture that has encouraged me deeply is Galatians 6:9: “Let us not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
This verse reminds me that growth and harvest rarely happen at the same time as the effort. Life often moves through different seasons—times of planting, tending, and waiting.
During the waiting seasons, it’s easy to wonder if anything meaningful is happening at all.
But just because results aren’t immediately visible doesn’t mean your efforts are wasted.
God sees the quiet faithfulness that others may overlook. He sees the courage it takes to keep moving forward when the future feels uncertain. And in His perfect timing, growth reveals itself—not always suddenly or dramatically, but steadily and faithfully.
If You Feel Like You’re Not Growing
If you find yourself in a season that feels heavy or stretching right now, I want you to hear this gently.
If you are still showing up each day—even when it feels difficult—you are growing.
If you are continuing to choose faith when circumstances feel uncertain, you are growing.
If you are taking the next step forward, even slowly, you are growing.
Growth does not belong only to the seasons that feel joyful or easy. It happens right in the middle of the struggle. It takes place in the quiet decision to believe that your story is not finished and that something meaningful can still come from the path you’re walking.
You may not feel strong or confident, but the simple act of continuing forward has incredible power.
One Day You’ll See How Far You’ve Come
One day, you will look back on this season with a new perspective. You may not wish to relive it, but you will recognize the strength that was formed during those difficult days
You may find yourself saying:
“I made it.”
“God was faithful.”
“I am stronger than I realized.”
“I’m proud of the person I’ve become.”
Those words will carry a depth of meaning because they were earned through experience. They will remind you that God was working even when you couldn’t see it and that the strength you needed was quietly forming all along.
Growth often becomes visible only in hindsight. But when you finally recognize it, the realization can be deeply encouraging.
Strong Roots Are Forming
Even if you don’t see blossoms yet, strong roots are forming beneath the surface.
Those roots help anchor you when life feels uncertain. They provide stability during storms and create the foundation needed for lasting growth. Just as a tree must develop deep roots before it can grow tall and strong, our lives also need strong foundations.
The roots forming in your life today are preparing you for the seasons ahead. They are strengthening your character, deepening your faith, and building resilience that will support you in ways you may not yet understand.
So keep going. Keep trusting. Keep showing up.
Something beautiful is forming beneath the surface—and one day you will see just how much you’ve been growing.
